“Our tournament can be somewhat unusual in that we unashamedly strive for quality rather than quantity. This is evidenced in both the teams and the partners that we attract. We are very proud of the quality of our events. We strive to make every aspect of them superior to what is offered by our competitors.”
-Selvakumar, SingaCup Tournament Director

DO YOU KNOW?
Deepavali, popularly known as the “festival of lights,” is primarily a five day Hindu festival. Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji.
The name “Diwali” or “Divali” is a contraction of “Deepavali”, which translates into “row of lamps”. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one’s house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst because it is believed that it drives away evil spirits. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.
The festival starts with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year. The second day of the festival is called the Naraka Chaturdasi. Amavasya, the third day of Diwali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The fourth day of Diwali is known as Kartika Shudda Padyami. The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj), and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.
This year, Diwali is celebrated on Sunday, 3rd November.

Singapore lies in the center of the South East Asia, had always been the center of commerce. And as Singapore moves towards being a sports hub of the region, facilities and mentality in the island state had been gradually moving inline with this vision.
Singa Cup, hosted in Singapore is part of this movement. This gradually improvement in the “little red dot” is evident, as Australia Football West Tour Director, Rod Bentley, and Loyola Meralco Sparks’ Coaching Director, Nenita Burgess, cited Singapore’s excellent playing facilities and the appropriate international football exposure as the main reasons why their teams were here for SingaCup.
As the country continue in their progress towards sporting excellence and inclusiveness, we are likely to see Singa Cup ride on this wave towards greater heights!

“… …it has been a very great exposure for all the participants and officials. The camaderie and level of competition is very stiff and challenging.
Overall, I enjoyed my 5 days that has kept me in full adrenaline pumping. My boys still talk about their matches in the competition.”

“It was good for the kids, it was very enjoyable, they see different cultures, meet different people, and they make new friends,”
Said John Palmer, who travelled with another 20 adults from Western Australia to Singapore to accompany and support their children who were participating in the tournament.
—
“For us this is much more than football, because we are from an orphanage, and it’s about travelling, [experiencing] other cultures, other people, other countries. We take it (football) seriously, but it is not the most important thing,”
said Hannu Tuukkanen, manager of Youth Football Home Phuket.
—
“Good, it’s been really good, it’s been a really good experience playing with other people as well. I get to play international and that’s good.”
said Football West Australian Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player winner Longmore.
